The Grandparents Diary - BBC4
23 Jul 09
A documentary series looking at the relationships between grandparents and their grandchildren. Londoner Ian Batten, a fashion designer in his early sixties, had taken family holidays on the Suffolk coast when his children were young. Now he was taking his seven grandchildren instead, leaving their parents at home.
The children, ranging from toddlers to teenagers, stayed at The Vineyard at Kelsale just a few miles from the coast. The programme not only revealed the close and positive bond between grandparent and grandchildren, but killed the myth that sophisticated teenagers are unable to simply muck in and enjoy the delights of a bygone age.
As a 1960s dad who brought his own children up in the liberal spirit of the time, his approach was a hit with the kids, who enjoyed the old fashioned delights of an easter egg hunt in the beautiful gardens as well as trips to Dunwich and Southwold, where the Pier was (as it had been for their grandfather) a huge success.
